How to build and verify a B2B calling list: 2,266 of 2,733 companies made the cut
An agent can call perfectly, but if it's the wrong person or the wrong company on the other end, there's no conversation. The list is half the battle. Here's how we build and clean ours, and how much gets filtered out along the way.

Where to source companies
We build the list ourselves from open business sources:
- Maps and directories—the bulk of it. For the UAE, that's over 2,000 companies from maps.
- Classifieds portals—who's actually selling this kind of product right now.
- Industry catalogs and yellow pages—fewer, but more accurate.
- Website search—to fill in missing contacts.
For every company we record where it came from. Later that shows which source produces conversations and which only produces missed calls.
What we filter out
UAE example: of 2,733 companies collected, 467 didn't make it into the campaign.
| Reason | Companies |
|---|---|
| Off-profile (don't sell these cars) | 190 |
| Dead phone number or contact | 151 |
| Duplicates | 59 |
| Branches of the same chain (we call head office) | 48 |
| Stop list (asked not to be called, etc.) | 19 |
Drop-off in Venezuela was higher—36%: of 1,268 companies, 816 made it into the campaign.
Sanctions screening
For export sales, this step is mandatory. Every active company is checked against the primary sources: the OFAC list (US), the UN Security Council consolidated list, and the EU and UK lists. The lists are downloaded in full and updated regularly. A match means stop and check the company by hand.
Calls clean the list
The most useful filter shows up after the first calls. The three objections the agent heard most:
- “You've got the wrong number”—wrong profile or wrong department.
- “We don't import, we buy locally.”
- “Chinese brands aren't our segment.”
Every answer like that goes into the company's record. We don't call them again, and we pre-filter similar companies in the next wave.
Company dossier
For warm leads we build out a dossier: website, profile, business size, what they're selling now. It helps the sales rep prep for the conversation—and sometimes shows right away that the company is bigger or smaller than its map listing suggested.
FAQ
Can you work with the client's own list?
Yes. But we verify it too: duplicates, working numbers, sanctions lists, and in countries where AI calls require consent, whether that consent exists.
How many companies do you need for a pilot?
Depends on the industry, but for clear conclusions, a few hundred. In the UAE, the agent called 680 companies in three weeks, and that was enough to see the whole funnel.
Why not just buy a ready-made list?
Purchased lists go stale fast and rarely match your profile. Building your own takes more time, but you see the drop-off up front, not on the calls.
